As one of the only sources of ivory that can be easily exported from Africa, the warthog is highly sought after on many African safaris. The warthog tusk items featured on the African Custom Knives website are gathered by the South African locals, usually after a drought, as sheds, or after a warthog passes from natural causes.
It is known that because of its natural fit in the hand, many knifemakers use the warthog tusk to make some of their first knives. The whole tusk can be used on hidden tang knives, or the tusk can be cut in half and pinned to a full tang knife. The latter is the most popular, but it leaves the pointed end of the tusk as a 2-4” piece of scrap.
There is a saying in Africa, that roughly translates to a familiar saying in English, “Waste not, want not.” Because the ivory has become so valuable, many makers have been creating unique products – keychains, lanyard beads, wine and bottle openers to name a few.
Although the tusk is hollow, the last couple inches are usually solid ivory. Each tusk is capped with a brass or titanium plate and polished to a smooth finish. The key ring is made from stainless steel. The large tusk keychain is approximately 3-4” in length. Each finished product is unique and no two are exactly alike.
